Veazie – Ralph H. “Skipper” Bates, 85, resident of Veazie formerly of Whiting and Machias died October 15, 2018 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was born January 30, 1933 in Whiting, ME a son of Hubert and Effie (Crane) Bates. Skipper was educated in Whiting and Machias schools and graduated from Machias High School. Following graduation from Machias, Skipper served for four years in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he was stationed in Japan.
Upon returning from serving his country, he attended Gates Business College in Augusta where he graduated after a three year program.
He worked his career as a bank manager for several area banks in Orono, Old Town, and Bangor before retiring in his 50’s when the banks merged with Fleet Bank.
Skipper was a former member of the Rotary Club in Old Town and had belonged to several antique and coin clubs as he was an avid and trusted coin collector and appraiser. He enjoyed travelling and looking for rare antiques to add to his collection.
He was predeceased by daughter Allison Rebecca Bates and a sister, Eleanor “Judy” Cook.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Myrna Joyce (Randall) Bates of Veazie, a sister-in-law Beverly Randall as well as one niece, one grand nephew and one special grand niece Jessica Oaks.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in the Whiting Cemetery in Whiting.
