Perry – Mary Ernestine Socoby Yarmal, passed away on Thursday, November 8th, 2018, at her home in Pleasant Point, Perry after battling cancer.  She was born on August 8th, 1935 and was the beloved daughter of Mary (Mitchell) Socoby and Joseph John Socoby.

She graduated from Shead High School and served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. After living in Buffalo, New York for several years, she returned to her home in Maine where she worked as an assistant to Chief Eugene Francis and started the Tribal Housing Authority. She was a professor of Anthropology at Wesleyan University in Conn. and later became the first Female Lt. Governor of the Passamaquoddy Tribe.

She was a friend of Bill W. for more than 30 years. She is survived by daughters, Denise Altvater and husband Brian, Lori Brown and husband William, Debra Yarmal, Jodi Hodgdon and husband Keith and Sandra Yarmal. Grandchildren, Brian Altvater Jr., John Barnes, Eric Altvater, Richard Socobasin, Holly Altvater, Lisa Marie Reese, Jillian Yarmal, Shawn Hastings, Craig Hastings, David Barnes, Jacob Nicholas, Samantha Ebbeson and twenty-one great grandchildren. A sister, Bernice Greeley and special godchild, Susan Walsh. She will also be greatly missed by adopted daughter, Therese Burns, lifelong friends Dolly Apt and Lorraine Francis and special friends Laura Jurewitz, Pat Doyle, Shonna Lewey and Sally Jo Rice. She was predeceased by daughters, Cheryl Yarmal and Michelle Ebbeson, brother John Socoby and sister Yvonne Nott.

Friends and relatives can pay their respects at her home, 2 Elders Way, Pleasant Point on Wednesday, November 14th starting at 2:00 and a Catholic Service will take place on Thursday, November 15th, at 1:00 at the Beatrice Rafferty School.

 

 

Visitation: Wednesday, November 14, 2018, starting at 2:00 pm, at her home, 2 Elders Way, Pleasant Point.

Service: Thursday, November 15, 2018, 1:00 pm, Beatrice Rafferty School.

    this woman was special, always nice to everyone, when she lived by my mom she was always over house, they would play skip-bo all night, laugh over things from the past, always speaking in Passamaquoddy. I’m so sorry for you all I know how this feels and my heart breaks for you all. Rest In Peace my cougin (cousin)
